It doesn’t happen often, usually just once or twice in a generation, but sometimes someone brings something great into the world, and Sony digital recording binoculars may be just that thing. These Sony has long been renowned for making extremely high quality, top of the line cameras and video technology merchandise. As such, thinking about trying their newest ‘toys’ may come to some as a dream come true. However, it is still yet to be seen if these are indeed worth the price.
Sony Digital Recording Binoculars: What are they?
Some people may ask what exactly Sony digital recording binoculars are. Well, it is actually pretty self-explanatory. They are binoculars. They are digital. And they take pictures. As stated above, Sony has a very good reputation of making extremely high quality products, and lately, their devices have only reinforced this reputation. The beauty behind these devices is that they combine multiple different devices into one, handy and available device that is capable of performing the functions of all three.
This means that instead of carrying a large, clunky camera with a large zoom lens, with a pair of typical optical binoculars, you can have a pair of binoculars that receive images digitally, and with which you can record not only pictures, but videos as well!
Sony DEV-3 Digital Recording Binoculars
Sony DEV-3 Digital Recording Binoculars are Sony’s latest achievement in the area of photo and video technology. These devices combine the functionality of a high quality, long range camera with that of a sturdy digital video recorder, giving you the functionality of both in just one device. However, they come with a pretty steep price tag: $1400. Yep. 1400 bucks to get your hands on these babies. So the question becomes, are they worth it? To some the answer may be yes.
These digital recording binoculars are able to take still images of a quality of up to 7.1 mega pixels. That is pretty good. As well, they support 1080P 3D video recording, and come with a 10x optical zoom. Unfortunately, they don’t come with a digital zoom.

Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars
Sony takes it another step even further with the Sony DEV-5 digital recording binoculars, as opposed to their lower model, the DEV-3 digital recording binoculars. These special binoculars combine traditional, high quality optical binoculars with a digital camera and recording capability. As well, as opposed to the lower model, which only has a 10x optical zoom, these babies come with up to 20x digital zoom. They also give you up to 7.1 mega pixels of resolution, and 1080P 3D video recording capabilities.
However, unlike their lesser cousin, they also include a GPS, so that your location is automatically recorded when you shoot a picture or video, and it comes with a bag and some accessories as well. However, it also comes with a higher price tag: $2000.
All said and done, we’re not sure we’d recommend these devices…yet. Although they show great promise, they have a very steep price tag, and probably not a very large target market. However, if the Sony digital recording binoculars family tweaks a few things, they may just be the next big thing.
