Oliver Stone’s new Wall Street movie (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It is the highly anticipated sequel to the first movie in 1987 about 1980’s era business practices on Wall Street. This time around, the events are said to cover the recent highly publicized unethical business practices on Wall Street that occurred before the recent economic crash. Some major timepieces are features in the film. Including a Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece on Michael Douglas’ character Gordon Gekko, and this Vacheron Constantin Les Historiques American 1921 watch on Josh Brolin’s character “Bretton James.”

The 18k gold watch is a re-release of a model from the 1920s that Vacheron Constantin specially made for an American collector. The watch features a uniquely aligned watch dial in a cushion style case meant to be easily read when looking on your wrist at an angle. The style of the design is reminiscent of pocket watches, as well as the style of timepieces from that era. Pomme hands glide nicely over beautifully rendered Arabic numerals with a lighter colored subsidiary seconds dial.

Stone’s Wall Street movies aren’t exactly about traditional protagonists, and Brolin’s character of Bretton James isn’t a “good guy.” Though no one in the film really is. A perceived archetype of a ruthless Wall Street business personality, the character’s adornment of the luxury Vacheron Constantin watch is a note on the prevalence of fine watches in the financial community. Where wealth is vast, it is interesting to observe the types of timepieces people choose to wear when they are afforded so many options. The clean, innocent looks of the Les Historiques American 1921 sets an interesting contrast on the otherwise devious character in the film. Perhaps the worst men wear the most friendly of watches, while wellnatured people are prone to wearing aggressive timepieces that likewise don’t always coincide with their personality.
