Countdown Begins For Motorola CLIQ On T-Mobile

T-Mobile has started the pre-sale countdown clock for the Motorola CLIQ, their first Android device and the first phone ever to feature the new MOTOBLUR technology. But don’t get too excited yet… there’s a catch.

Instead of the rumored cheapo price (or giveaway) that usually accompanies a buzz breakthrough tech gizmo, activation will cost 200 bucks IF you sign a 2 year contract. Old, dirty tricks die hard. But this time, the ankle irons may be worth it. This phone puts all your email (home, work and porn site phony ID) PLUS all your social networking tools literally in the palm of your hand. And, oh yeah, it makes phone calls.

Pre-registering doesn’t really get you much, except for bragging rights over the next 3 weeks that you’ll have the unit once they start shipping on Oct. 19, way before we mere mortals have to schlep to the store for the network roll out at T-Mobile retail outlets on Nov. 2. That gives you plenty of time to load up all your SN apps into a centralized palm unit and throw your other mobys to the dogs. You know, Facebook, Twitter, Google Mobile, Gmail… even (ahem) MySpace.

What about Bebo, you ask? No worries. T-Mobile assures there will be plenty of upgrades available once the next hot social networking app blows Facebook out of the water. Hold on… just found out my name is available on Zorpia… be right back.

As far as gobbledygook, there’s plenty of it. So much in fact, I’ll let Motorola do the talking, straight from the press release: “In addition to the unique MOTOBLUR experience, the CLIQ features a premium design with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch HVGA full touch-screen display. The phone delivers a powerful mobile Web experience by harnessing the strength and speed of T-Mobile’s 3G network and Wi-Fi. Additional CLIQ features include a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with video capture, a 3.5mm headset jack, a music player with pre-loaded Amazon MP3 store application, Shazam, iMeem Mobile, AccuWeather, MySpace Mobile, Quickoffice and a pre-installed 2GB microSD memory card with support for up to 32 GB of removable memory. TeleNav GPS Navigator is also preloaded on the device with a free two-week trial, including voice-activated turn-by-turn directions.”

What a mouthful… I couldn’t have typed it better myself. But buried in that document is the big news… “a chance to win a trip with five friends to one of four select destinations. In addition, those that register before Oct. 19 will also have the opportunity to instantly win a new CLIQ.”

So what are you waiting for? Can’t you just see yourself and 5 buds on a trip to a select destination? Sweet. Let’s just hope there’s a 3G network tower nearby.
